Dale Cooper, a performing artist and dance teacher in the Yukon, has also been a visual artist since she was old enough to hold a crayon in her hand.
She took some visual art courses at Concordia University in Montreal in the late 1970’s and created artwork and advertising for Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada where she worked at the time. When she began studying dance, she often paid her way by designing posters, T-shirts and logos for various dance studios across the country. Dale moved to the Yukon in the early 1980’s to be part of the Frantic Follies Vaudeville Revue and made the Yukon her home. She has painted backdrops and helped with set design for shows in the Yukon, including: Guild Hall Productions, The Gaslight Follies, and The Frantic Follies. She has also created several murals for Selkirk Elementary School.
Dale has experimented with several mediums including pencil and charcoal drawings, collage work, water colours and acrylics. Her most recent works are acrylic on canvas with a one and1/2 inch border. She likes to use this type of canvas because it allows her to continue painting the image around the sides of the canvas. As she is very drawn to the movement and allure of the ever-changing Yukon skies, they are a prominent feature in many of her works. She is also fascinated with the forest colours and varied plant life in the Yukon through the changing seasons. Dale’s attention to detail brings her paintings to life. They have often been compared to photographs.
